Specific Information

The Council does not have an official policy document regarding garage sales. The Department of Fair Trading is the appropriate government agency overseeing the conduct of these sales. From our perspective, they do not need Council's consent if they are occasional "one off" events. If a particular person wished to conduct regular garage sales (i.e. engaging in a "business" running garage sales), then that may involve considerations requiring approval by the Council by way of a relatively uncomplicated development application. The Council operates a free advisory service for members of the public seeking information about development approvals at our front counter between 9:00am and 1:00pm on Mondays - Thursdays.

Issues such as signage and limitations on time of day are governed by a myriad of government legislation, regulations and environmental policies. To research these, or any re levant Port Macquarie-Hastings policies, I suggest you have a look a the "Policies and Procedures" section of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Website www.hastings.nsw.gov.au or the New South Wales Government legislation Website at www.legislation.nsw.gov.au.
